CREATING SMALL TOWN LOVE SINCE 1870
Situated in the rich fertile valley of the
Nemaha River
, Sterling is one of the most prosperous agricultural districts in the country. Sterling, population 507, is the second largest town in
Johnson County
and is located 14 miles northwest of Tecumseh, our county seat, and 45 miles southeast of Lincoln, our state Capital.
Our community was named when William Mann, John Bentz, and William Kneeland decided to flip a $20 gold piece for the honor of naming their settlement. Mr. Mann, being the lucky one, named it Sterling, after his hometown in Illinois. Sterling celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1995 and is proving to be a progressive, forward thinking community. Sterling has positioned itself for a period of growth by making significant improvements to its infrastructure in recent years. A new sewage treatment plant was built in 1990; and a new municipal well was dug in 1991.
